Kapawe’no First Nation – At Kapawe’no Nêhiyawak School and Buffalo Bay Academy, recognizing the strengths and contributions of our student-athletes is a cherished tradition. This week, we are proud to spotlight two exceptional individuals who not only excel in their chosen sports but also embody the values that we, as a Nation, uphold.
For the boys, our athlete of the week is Steven Plashka, Grade 7. Steven started the season with challenges but showed an unyielding spirit. Instead of stepping back, he leaned into the struggle, dedicating himself to enhancing his skating skills and attitude. His perseverance has not only improved his performance but also set a powerful example for his peers.
On the girls’ side, we celebrate Rilynn Cardinal, Grade 4 as our athlete of the week. Initially struggling even to stand on skates, Rilynn’s journey has been one of grit and willpower. Utilizing skate supports, she committed to practicing laps until she could skate unaided. Her dedication is paving the way for her to become an integral part of the team and the Muskwak Program.
Through these students, we see the embodiment of our ancestral values—commitment, respect, and a will to improve. They serve as living proof that the pursuit of excellence enriches us all, strengthening the ties within our school community and our Nation as a whole.
